Tokyo’s Takeru Kobayashi stunned the crowds at this year’s Krystal Square Off World Hamburger-Eating Championship held at Ross’s Landing in Chattanooga this afternoon.
Many thought the champion eater’s career was over and he had passed his prime. Even as the event began commentators noted that he’d made a sluggish start compared to defending champion Joey Chestnut. But Kobayashi kept his pace as other competitors began to slow. By the end of the eight minute challenge Kobayashi had stormed ahead downing a staggering 93 burgers. That’s ten below the record set by Chestnut back in 2007, but with recent rule changes that record may never be beaten.
Chestnut limped home with a total of just 81 burgers and took second place.
