Another usually non-aggressive black bear in Aspen has broken into a house and attacked the owner.
David Berley was sitting down to dinner with his wife Mary on Thursday evening when their three Labrador dogs alerted them to an intruder in their home. Mr Berley rushed downstairs to find his three dogs barking wildly, they had cornered the bear in the hallway.
Hoping to prevent his dogs from getting injured Mr Berley approached the scene but was injured himself when the bear swiped his face causing a deep laceration in his left cheek which later required stitches.
“He had blood all over and a huge gouge where the bear swiped him,” Mrs Berley told the Post Independent.
Mr Berley managed to open a window in the kitchen and then barricaded himself in his study whilst his wife took refuge in the bedroom and called 911.
The angry bear urinated all over the Berley’s hallway before heading out through the kitchen window without even bothering to eat the freshly prepared lasagna which was sitting on the table.
Wildlife officers are now searching for the bear and a trap has been set outside the Berley’s home in case the bear returns.
