Fawziya Abdullah Youssef was just 11 years old when her father married her off to a 24 year old farmer in Yemen.
Yesterday she died from severe bleeding whilst giving birth to a stillborn baby in the al-Zahra district hospital. Ahmed al-Quraishi, chairman of Siyaj human rights organization in Yemen told the Associated Press that this case was just a drop in the ocean.
“This is one of many cases that exist in Yemen,” said al-Quraishi.
“The reason behind it is the lack of education and awareness, forcing many girls into marriage in this very early age.”
A recent report by the Social Affairs Ministry in Yemen claims that 25% of girls in the country are married by the time they are 15 years old. And this case seems to confirm that the husbands are indeed consummating these marriages even with girls as young as 12.
Child brides are a custom in several Islamic states, measures to bring an end to the practice is even being criticised for being un-Islamic.
