Sarah, an eight year old cheetah from Cincinnati Zoo is officially the fastest mammal on the planet.
Cincinnati Zoo’s Cat Ambassador Programme organised the record attempt and used a lure to encourage Sarah to run a 100m course.
The previous record was set by a male cheetah in South Africa who finished the distance in just 6.19 seconds, Sarah had three attempts at the record and beat it twice. Her first effort broke the record with a time of just 6.16 seconds, and then she improved her time on the second attempt by finishing in 6.13 seconds and actually catching the lure. Unsurprisingly her third attempt was a little slower at 6.33 seconds, clearly losing interest in the lure.
The fastest man on record is Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, but at 9.58 seconds he doesn’t stand a chance against Sarah.
“It’s really great for Sarah to have the honor as the fastest in the world, but I also hope this record-breaking run helps to raise awareness of the plight of the cheetah,” said Cathryn Hilker, founder of the Cincinnati Zoo’s Cat Ambassador Program.
