The long awaited Judge Dredd reboot is still underway, 2000ad artist Jock posted on his Twitter account this week that 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland had completed the screenplay for Danny Boyle’s film company DNA Films.
Garland has worked with Boyle previously on the aforementioned 28 Days Later, The Beach and Sunshine. A new Judge Dredd film has been eagerly anticipated since the pathetic attempt made by Danny Cannon in 1995 which was systematically ruined by Sylvester Stallone. Although Cannon was a fan of the comic book and made great efforts to please existing fans he was unfortunately unable to prevent production company bigwigs from sticking their noses in and basically making a complete pig’s ear of the movie.
Their greatest mistake was casting Stallone who is simply unable to pull off the role. When creating a movie based almost entirely on the strength of a character it is clearly a prerequisite to cast that character accurately. Dredd is a stone faced fascist bully boy, a complete anti-hero and not your run of the mill all American good guy, they really need to get Clint Eastwood while they still can.
Judge Dredd should be in cinemas in 2012.
