A retired primary school teacher has reported spotting a big cat, possibly a black panther prowling the South Lakeland countryside in Cumbria.

Jeni Boothman who was head teacher at Pennington CE Primary School near Ulverston told the Westmorland Gazette how she and her husband spotted the big cat as they drove along Crook Road just near Windermere.

“We had just gone past the Brown Horse Inn at Winster when it came across the road in front of us,” Mrs Boothman said.

“We thought it was a dog but as we got closer we realised it was definitely a big cat. It was black, had a smooth coat and a long tail that curled up at the end. I would say it was about the same size as a Labrador.”

The sighting took place at around 23:30, but Mrs Boothman insists the road was well lit from the car’s headlights and moonlight.

“It was no illusion,” she added. “It was definitely a big cat.”
