Sonya ThomasSonya “The Black Widow” Thomas will be in San Antonio this weekend hoping to emerge victorious from the Krystal Square Off World Hamburger-Eating Championship qualifying round.

Thomas is one of the favourites to take the title when the finals take place in Chattanooga, Tenn. on the 27th September. But first The Black Widow has to complete the qualifying round on Saturday at the Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park in San Antonio.

Sonya Thomas is the number one female competitive hamburger guzzler, her biggest threats to the title are Takeru Kobayashi and Joey Chestnut. Chestnut is automatically entered into the final as he won last years championships by eating 93 hamburgers in just eight minutes, but he set the world record in 2007 when he managed to stuff his face with an amazing 103 burgers in eight minutes.

Chestnut and Kobayashi are going to be tough to beat, but Thomas has been working out at the gym in preparation for the event. It might well take more than gym work to beat the champion though, Chestnut is reported to train by drinking four pints of milk immediately followed by eight pints of water every morning. This routine is said to stretch Chestnut’s stomach and may be the secret to his success.

In a recent change in the rules competitors will no longer be able to dunk their burgers in water before consuming them. This may add a little excitement to the championships as some of the favourites may struggle.
