An escaped marmoset monkey from Woburn Safari Park in Bedfordshire was discovered hiding in the home of a woman in a village two miles from the park.
Jean Peck’s 18 year old daughter Gemma and her boyfriend Colin Hinder, 21 spotted the simian intruder as they ate breakfast on Friday morning. The cheeky monkey had been in their home all night after sneaking in through an open window, the captured marmoset was one of a pair which escaped from the safari park on Thursday and made their way on their incredible journey across a busy road and about two miles across country till reaching the Peck’s cottage in Aspley Guise.
The monkey is believed to have gained entry through an open window on Thursday night, Jean Peck discovered a puddle of urine under the window and blamed it on the family dog, a toy poodle named Twink. We don’t know what kind of chastisement the pooch received but considering the useless mutt was oblivious to a monkey roaming around the house all night it probably deserved to miss it’s dinner.
No one was aware of the monkey’s presence until the following morning, Mr Hinder spotted the little fella, who Woburn Safari Park say is named Shadow, as he wriggled about on a curtain rail making itself more comfortable.
”Gemma was sat on the sofa right beneath the curtain rail eating her breakfast when I saw something move up there. She has a phobia of pigeons so I told her to move quick.” Mr Hinder told The Telegraph.
”We looked back to work out what it was and even though I could see it was a monkey my brain just would not process it. It just sat there looking at us and blinking. The only time it moved was to get more comfortable.”
The monkey must have been up on the curtain rail all the previous night, watching the Pecks as they watched television. The Peck’s soon realised that the fugitive must be from the nearby safari park and gave them a call. Within minutes a team of monkey coaxers arrived and persuaded Shadow to get in a monkey carrier and whisked him back to the park.
A spokesman for the park said they would be monitoring the monkeys to make sure they can’t escape again. Shadow’s partner in crime, named Kite, is still at large.
