Charles DarnellBoth the parents of two year old Shaiunna Hare have now been charged with her murder.

Shaiunna’s mother Jaren Hare and her boyfriend Charles Darnell were both arrested in Florida yesterday afternoon and charged with third degree murder, manslaughter, and child abuse. Hare handed herself in to police, Darnell was already in custody for a previous drugs charge.

Last month two year old Shaiunna was found dead in her crib after a pet albino Burmese python escaped from it’s vivarium and attacked the girl, she died from asphyxiation and had bite marks on her face and head. The snake was at first reported to belong to Darnell, who did not own a permit to keep the animal, but police now claim the girl’s mother was the owner of the snake.

“Although the albino Burmese python was the instrument of death, the two adults in the home are responsible for ensuring the child’s safety and welfare,” Assistant State Attorney Peter Magrino told Tampa Bay Online.

Darnell told police that the snake had a history of escaping from it’s cage, on the night of the attack it had already escaped once and Darnell had placed the eight and a half foot reptile inside a bag and then inside it’s vivarium, which he forgot to lock.

The following morning Darnell discovered the snake coiled around the baby, he attacked it with a knife and managed to get it to release Shaiunna from it’s grip but it was already too late. Darnell then made an emotional call to 911.

“The baby’s dead. … Our stupid snake got out in the middle of the night and strangled the baby. … She got out of the cage last night and got into the baby’s crib and strangled her to death.” he told the operator.

Police arrived at the family home in Oxford Fl. and found the snake still alive and cowering under furniture. It is believed to have been rehoused.
