World's biggest cupcakeThe record for the world’s biggest cupcake has been smashed this weekend by Gourmet Gift Baskets in Michigan.

The previous record was set in July by Cakes.com who produced a cupcake weighing 150 lbs which stood a foot high and had a two foot diameter. But Gourmet Gift Baskets absolutely trounced that record this weekend by unveiling a whopping 1224 pound cupcake! That’s eight times the size of the previous record holder!

The cake was verified by Guinness World Records Adjudicator Carl Saville at the great unveiling at the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise classic cars event in Detroit. Gourmet Food Baskets organised this record breaking achievement in aid of a breast cancer charity, you can give a donation here.

The cupcake was vanilla flavoured and used 800 eggs, 200 lbs of sugar and 200 lbs of flour. Once the cake had been verified it was cut up into thousands of portions and sold, with all proceeds going to breast cancer awareness.

The event very nearly ended in disaster as the cake was almost ruined the night before the unveiling. Even in the enormous prototype industrial oven that Gourmet Food baskets had built to attempt the record, the cake got too large and dislodged a heating element in the oven which cut the cake in half. But the bakers soldiered on and managed to salvage half of the cake, which still smashed the world record!

If they had been successful the cupcake would have actually been twice the size and stood almost seven feet tall.
