The pneumonic plague scare in Colorado this week was a false alarm.
Yesterday we reported that a cat in Colorado had tested positive for pneumonic plague, but the cat’s owner who is also a veterinarian has told the Vail Daily that her cat is recovering well from septicemic plague.
Suzanne Barnes says her cat Buni contracted septicemic plague from a pack of rats but is now back home and responding well to treatment. 14 year old Buni is thought to have contracted the illness from eating a rat who was carrying the disease.
Mrs Barnes warned other pet owners that protecting their animals from fleas is not always enough to ensure they won’t pick up nasty illnesses such as the plague.
Septicemic plague although very nasty is less of a concern as the deadlier airborne pneumonic plague.
