A baby born in January in a remote Himalayan village in Nepal has four arms and four legs, pilgrims are travelling from far and wide to see the infant who they believe is a reincarnation of the Hindu god Ganesh.
Risab Ghimire has a headless parasitic twin attached to his abdomen, this means he has two sets of arms and legs and also a second stomach.
“Some say he is like a god and they come to worship him and give money,” his 32-year-old father, Rikhi Ghimire told The Guardian.
“They just give a few rupees, make an offering. Mostly the gifts are food and clothes. Others have said he looks like a monkey or is the child of a witch.”
Risab’s mother, Januk Ghimire had a difficult labour and was in great pain for days leading up to the birth, she thought she would die in childbirth.
“When he was born I was frightened about what the other villagers would say,” she said.
“If my husband hadn’t been there, I would have been scared they would say I was a witch and come and kill me.”
Mr Ghimire took his son to a hospital in Kathmandu where doctors said they would like to monitor Risab for a few months. But the family is very poor, they live in a single room home built from clay which they share with several goats and chickens. Mr Ghimire couldn’t afford to stay in Kathmandu for that long and had to return home.
Mr and Mrs Ghimire would like little Risab to have an operation so that he can lead a normal life, but they know they will never be able to afford it.
