A town in northwest China has been placed under quarantine after a man died from pneumonic plague, and 11 others were confirmed to have the deadly disease.
Pneumonic plague is caused by the same bacteria as bubonic plague, but is much more serious as the killer disease is spread through the air rather than from flea bites. The disease hits people’s lungs and patients can die within 24 hours of infection, making treatment very difficult.
The Associated Press reports that the town of Ziketan and it’s population of over 10,000 people are now quarantined and anyone who has visited the area in the past two weeks should get medical treatment immediately if they begin showing symptoms such as coughing or fever.
The Black Death killed 25 million people in Europe during the middle ages.
