Torchwood season four confirmed

Gwen CooperAccording to ComicMix a BBC America rep has confirmed that the show will get a fourth season.

It’s not entirely surprising that the show is being picked up again, the ratings for Children of Earth have been impressive on both sides of the Atlantic. What is troubling is how the show will actually continue now that Torchwood, the organisation has been destroyed.

By the end of Children of Earth Ianto Jones is dead, Captain Jack Harkness leaves and Gwen Cooper is expecting a baby. The two other main team members were killed at the end of season two, there’s really not much of Torchwood left, the hub was destroyed and they even had their car nicked!

If the rumours are true and Torchwood is returning to our screens they will be virtually starting from scratch. Captain Jack may well return from his travels, although Torchwood is just Captain Jack, it ran for years without him before. Ianto could in theory be raised from the dead, following his death thousands of fans have been protesting and calling for his resurrection. Hopefully the BBC producers won’t cave in to this pressure, Ianto is better off dead.

That just leaves Gwen, and family. Gwen’s husband Rhys, played by Kai Owen took a greater role in the last season of Torchwood. Maybe he’ll become a full time member of the new team?

There is always scope for the return of Captain John Hart, the scheming Time Agent played by Buffy the Vampire Slayer star James Marsters. Captain John was portrayed as a villain, but Captain Jack was shown to have his nasty side. If John Barrowman doesn’t reprise his role as team leader Torchwood will have an opening for an anti-hero to give them their edge.

What do you think season four will have in store for us?
