Five men have been convicted in Burundi for the murder of an albino.
The leader of the gang was jailed for life for the murder of an albino man who was dismembered and his body parts sold to witch doctors. The four other men received between seven and 15 years in prison for their parts in the crime.
Whilst only one man was convicted of murder, the others were found guilty of kidnapping, attempted murder and as accessories to the murder. One man was charged solely with dismembering the corpse to harvest the valuable body parts and organs.
“There is one who was found guilty of planning and executing the crime, the three others attempted to kill and kidnap a woman and a child,” Dodolin Nahamasabo, the head of the court, told the Reuters news agency.
“Another one was condemned for mutilation and participation in the association of criminals … We decided to release three of them because we didn’t find enough evidence,” Nahamasabo said.
This marks the first successful convictions in Africa since the trend in albino slaying began. Albino body parts have soured in demand in Tanzania, it is believed the murdered albinos in Burundi were dismembered and their parts sold to Tanzanian witch doctors.
