The 2009 world snail racing championship was held today at the Congham Church Fete in Norfolk.

Competitors from around the globe entered their snails in the competition which is an annual event and attracts over 200 entrants. Snails are raced against each other by placing them on a circular course which has a 13 inch radius, the molluscs are placed in the centre of the course and race outwards towards the edge.

All snails are individually numbered to identify them, the race begins when an elected snail trainer gives the command “ready, steady, slow!”

This year the The 2009 world champion was Terri, who is owned by 27-year-old Claire Hopkins from West Raynham Park near Fakenham. Terri covered the 13 inches in just 2 mins 49 secs, which smashes last years winning time of 3 minutes 28 seconds. Terri received a silver tankard stuffed with lettuce leaves as first prize.

The world record was set in 1995 by a snail named Archie who finished the race in exactly 2 minutes.
