Poo canoeTwo Welshmen are set to paddle across the English Channel in a canoe made from sheep dung.

Lez Paylor and Lawrence Toms run Creative Paper Wales in Snowdonia, where they produce paper made from sheep excrement. Animal poo paper is becoming more and more common as an environmentally safe way of producing paper, it’s actually very clean and doesn’t smell like a sheep’s rear end at all. A company in Tasmania recently began producing paper from wombat droppings.

Toms and Paylor have now embarked on a mission to build a canoe using only environmentally friendly materials and to cover the frame with waterproofed poo paper. The canoe has been tested at Bala Water Sports on Llyn Tegid with limited success.

After the test run a wet patch was found in the bottom of the canoe, it has been taken back to the workshop to be thoroughly dried out and an extra coat of a nautical resin made from soya beans.

The pair are confident the canoe can be made seaworthy and have announced plans to paddle across the English Channel in aid of the Wales Air Ambulance. A date for the crossing will be announced once the sponsorship target is met, and the pair hope to raise one pence for every ten sheep in Wales, that comes to a whopping £11,978.59.

Anyone wishing to sponsor the intrepid duo in their sheep dung canoe can do so at their sponsorship page: The Poo Canoe.
