A female diver in San Diego has been attacked by a massive Humboldt squid.

Associated Press reports that jumbo squid have been invading the shallow waters off the coast of San Diego in their thousands, and scuba divers have been falling victim to the aggressive cephalopods. Most divers have been avoiding the area since the squid arrived, but some of the more intrepid ones have risked their own personal safety to get close to the mysterious sea creatures.

Shandra Magill couldn’t resist the chance to get up close to the beasts and recently joined part of a group who went swimming with the giant squid. To begin with things went well, the squid appeared docile and playfully tapped the divers with their tentacles or gently bumped into them. But later a particularly large squid bashed into Magill from behind and ripped her diving equipment away from her with it’s arms.

Magill was thrown about in the water by the beast and became disorientated.

“I just kicked like crazy. The first thing you think of is, ‘Oh my gosh, I don’t know if I’m going to survive this. If that squid wanted to hurt me, it would have,” she said.

Humboldt Squid are carnivorous and aggressive animals, their tentacles are lined with rows of sharp “teeth” which they use to grab their prey and pull it into their razor sharp beaked mouths. They can grow up to two metres in length, weigh over 45 kilos and swim at very high speeds.
