The Little People of America have called for the word “midget” to be banned following an episode of Celebrity Apprentice.
At their annual conference in Brooklyn this week co-chairman Clinton Brown called for the Federal Communications Commission to ban the use of the word “midget” on broadcast TV. In April the group protested about an episode of Celebrity Apprentice when stars such as Joan Rivers created an advertising campaign named “Jesse James and the Midgets”. During the show the celebrities ridiculed little people when they suggested bathing them in detergent and hanging them out to dry.
President of the group’s Long Island chapter, Michael Petruzzelli said changes were needed in people’s social acceptance of offensive language.
“It’s not acceptable to call people the N-word, just as it’s not acceptable to call people the M-word,” he said. “The chosen term now is L.P., or little person.”
It is unclear whether dwarf is still an acceptable term.
