Police in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland are warning parents of a potentially deadly escaped snake in the area.

The six year old carpet python is around six feet long, non-venomous and described as harmless. However in light of the recent reports of the death of a toddler in America which was strangled by an escaped python it is advised that parents exercise extra vigilance until the reptile is recaptured.

The snake escaped from a home in the Abbots Gardens area of Newtonabbey, residents are advised not to approach the animal but should contact the police on 0845 600 8000.
