Four men are being held in custody in India after they were discovered eating the partially burned remains of a woman, straight off the funeral pyre.

The Times of India reports that a night watchman at the cremation ground in Palwal spotted the four cannibals pulling the half burned body off the fire and eating parts of it.

The four men are named as Santram, his son Sunil and two other men Ramesh and Kamal. It is reported that Sunil was approached by Chhawender Singh who paid him to tend to his dead mother’s funeral pyre after all the mourners had left the cremation grounds. But Sunil, his father and the two other men sat around the fire drinking and then began helping themselves to the burnt offerings.

The watchman Ajay quickly reported what he had witnessed to the cremation ground management committee member Krishan Kumar Bhutani, around that time word spread and a crowd gathered in the cremation grounds. The four cannibals received a swift beating from the angry crowd, and were then handed over to the police.

They have been placed on remand for five days and have been charged with various offences (trespassing on burial places with the intention of wounding feelings of any person, insulting religion, defiling a place of worship with intent to insult religion of any class and wanton provocation).
