Nine former SS officers have been jailed in Italy for their parts in the massacre of 350 civilians in the summer of 1944. A tenth defendant was found not guilty, and the last defendant died during the trial.
The eleven men were all charged with rounding up men, women and children in the Tuscan town of Fivizzano whilst searching for partisans and murdering them in a series of separate incidents.
The men are aged between 84 and 90 years old.
The German Government has been ordered to pay damages to the families of the victims, no figure has been determined but an initial sum of £1 million has been requested.
Germany is contesting the ruling, saying they have already paid reparations for Nazi crimes under international treaties with Italy.
