The Eleven Doctors

Doctor Who logoEver since The Three Doctors in 1972, the Doctor has had a habit of running into himself. Not all that surprising for a Time Lord I suppose.

The Three Doctors brought together William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and the then current Doctor Jon Pertwee in an adventure where they had to work together. In 1983 Doctor Who fans were treated to The Five Doctors, William Hartnell had died in 1975 and Richard Hurndall was enlisted to play the part of the first Doctor. Tom Baker was also absent from the filming, archive footage of him was used. The remaining three, Troughton, Pertwee and Peter Davidson all played full roles and the show was actually very good. It was produced to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the programme.

In 1985 Troughton’s second Doctor appeared with Doctor number six, Colin Baker in the obviously titled The Two Doctors. The grumpy pair battled with some nasty Sontarans, which was brilliant.

Since then there has been two BBC specials made for Children in Need, in 1993 Doctors three to seven all appeared in the story Dimensions in Time. And in 2007 Time Crash featured the tenth and fifth Doctors (Davidson and David Tennant). Now today the Mirror are reporting that another Children in Need special is to be produced that will include all eleven Doctors.

The show will only be 15 minutes long, and will feature every past incarnation of the Doctor, and the next one. The one off special will see the debut of eleventh Doctor Matt Smith, before he has even been regenerated. Obviously the three dead Doctors will only appear in the show using digital imagery taken from previously screened episodes from the 60s and 70s, but the remaining eight Doctors will all be assembled to shoot brand new scenes.

The obvious highlights will be seeing legendary Doctor Tom Baker wearing his trademark long scarf once more, but the fact they have persuaded Colin Baker and Paul McGann to reprise their roles is simply remarkable. The sixth Doctor Colin Baker left the show on poor terms with the BBC, he even refused to film his regeneration scene when short arse Sylvester McCoy took over. And Paul McGann isn’t even a proper Doctor in my opinion.

The one off special will be screened in November on BBC One as part of their Children in Need night, all the actors have waived their fee as it is a charity event. The plot will centre on David Tennant’s Doctor and the other Doctors assist him in his mission.

A BBC insider gave this statement to the Mirror.

“This is a momentous episode for all Doctor Who fans. Never before have all the Doctors been in the same room, let alone in the same show.

“It’s been a logistical nightmare getting all the actors together and available for shooting on the same days.

“But the script has already been started and it’s classic Doctor Who – really witty and very sharp.

“Viewers will see the Time Lords regenerating and emerging one by one from the Tardis, each with their own quirky opening line.

“David Tennant is the central character in the episode. He’s trying to hunt down some special time travel apparatus.

“What he’s actually lost has not yet been decided, but the idea is for all the other Doctors to club together to help David find it.

“The actors who are no longer with us, William, Jon and Patrick, will make special cameo appearances, with footage from original shows being flashed up on screen.

“It’s a really exciting project – and all for a good cause.”
