The Libyan health authorities have confirmed 13 cases of bubonic plague in a village in eastern Libya.

“Thirteen cases of the plague have been recorded in a village 30 kilometres away from Tobruk. Eleven people have already been treated and left hospital” Health Minister Mohamad Hijazi told reporters.

“The situation is under control. We are leading a massive campaign to clean up and disinfect the place,” he continued.

The outbreak is being blamed on rats, who’s numbers have been rising in recent years.

Bubonic plague causes buboes, or swollen lymph glands and black blotches on the skin as the flesh rots away whilst the sufferer is still alive.
