A heroin user who killed himself with a drugs overdose was left on the top deck of a London bus for six hours before anyone bothered to help him.
Polish immigrant Pawel Modzelewski boarded the number 36 bus at around 12.30am at Harrow Road, Queens Park, west London on 19th January 2009. CCTV footage shows that about a quarter of an hour after sitting down, Modzelewski slumped forward in a drink and drug induced stupor and vomited on himself. The precise time of death is unknown, but what is known is that 25 year old Modzelewski was ignored till around 01:30am when the driver of the bus tried to wake him as the bus was going out of service.
When the drug-addled wreck couldn’t be roused the driver simply left him in his seat, parked the bus in the overnight garage and went home for a well earned rest. Overnight mechanics and cleaners all failed to spot the dead junkie as the cleaners clearly shirked their responsibilities. It wasn’t until the bus returned to service at around 07:00am when passenger Morlaye Keppy-Camara eventually raised the alarm.
“I got on the bus and went upstairs. I walked towards the back of the bus. As I did so I passed a white male.
“He was slumped forwards in his seat and not moving.”
Mr Keppy-Camara said he went to the back of the bus but became more and more concerned.
“I decided to go and see if I could rouse him.”
At that point Mr Keppy-Camara noticed that Modzelewski was covered in sick and was clutching a hypodermic needle. The police were called and found heroin on the corpse. A post mortem concluded the Polish man had died from a heroin overdose.
