Violent clashes are currently taking place in Peru between indigenous South American Indians and the police.
The indigenous people of Peru have been protesting over free trade policies which would allow global multinational corporations to seize their lands in the Amazonas region of Peru. On Friday things turned ugly when the protesters took 38 police officers hostage and killed at least nine. So in retaliation the police and army have opened fire on the protesters and there are claims that up to 84 have been killed.
Infoshop News have received news from an indigenous community leader alleging that the police are murdering civilians and burning their corpses or dumping the bodies in the Marañón River.
The Peruvian Government have refused to debate the free trade policies, which could see foreign companies begin mining operations in the Amazonas region. And it is alleged that they have ordered the massacre of the Amazonas people. Police using helicopters are reported to be gunning down protesters in the street. Roads are blocked and the civilians are under curfew.
