Forget swine flu, an eight year old boy in New Mexico has died from the bubonic plague and his 10 year old sister is fighting for her life in hospital.

The New Mexico Department of Health is investigating the cause of the infection which they believe has most probably come from rat fleas. They are warning all New Mexico citizens to avoid contact with rodents and telling pet owners to have their pets treated with flea powder to prevent the risk of infection.

On average there are 10 to 15 cases of bubonic plague in the United States every year. CBS4 in Denver have reported that a squirrel has been diagnosed with carrying the plague today.

The symptoms of bubonic plague include vomiting blood, fever, diarrhoea, and spots which turn black as the infected flesh decomposes. The infection also causes swelling of lymph glands known as buboes as seen in our photograph.
