The Doctor’s New Assistant Is Confirmed

The BBC have announced today that Matt Smith’s new assistant when he takes over as the Doctor will be played by Karen Gillan.

Gillan will start her new role when the show returns in spring 2010 with Smith figureheading the hit series. Gillan has appeared in Doctor Who previously, she played the Soothsayer in episode The Fires of Pompeii. The 21 year old actress is from Inverness, Scotland.

“I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor’s new companion. – I just can’t wait to get started,” she said.

“The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can’t quite believe I am going to be a part of it.

“Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him,” she added.

The shows writer and executive producer described Gillan as “funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy”.

Gillan is practically unknown on the TV screen, she has little previous television experience other than Doctor Who.
