Original Buffy the Vampire Slayer film director Fran Rubel Kuzui is in talks with Vertigo Entertainment to make a sequel to the 1992 film which starred Kristy Swanson, Luke Perry and Donald Sutherland.
The new film will not be following on from the hugely successful television version, there is no mention of any involvement from Sarah Michelle Gellar and even the concept creator Joss Whedon may be excluded from the project.
Vertigo Entertainment, who specialise in remaking Japanese films such as The Grudge and The Departed have expressed an interest in making a complete new re-imagining of the film and went directly to Kuzui to pitch the idea. Kuzui reworked Whedon’s original script for the movie back in the early 90s and was a strong force in bringing the concept to the small screen later in that decade, she was executive producer of both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and it’s spin-off show Angel.
Kuzui told the Hollywood Reporter that she is hoping to start the franchise again from scratch and none of the more recent supporting characters will be in the new film. The aim will be to create a darker, event-sized movie that would, of course, have franchise potential.
