A serial burglar and weirdo stalker who disguised himself with a balaclava fashioned from a pair of knickers has been sentenced to six years in prison by a Lancashire court this week.

42 year old Gary Marie from Burnley broke into several houses and stole women’s underwear. He would then later film himself wearing the stolen lingerie in order to get a sexual thrill.

Marie was arrested on 19th March 2008 when police on a routine patrol around Padiham spotted him in the early hours of the morning prowling the streets wearing a pair of knickers on his face. Six officers pursued him as he tried to escape on a bicycle, when he was cornered Marie used a CS gas canister on the officers but was eventually overpowered and bundled into a police van.

The Daventry Express reports that the police later recovered a mobile phone and digital camera which contained evidence of Marie’s crimes. On one occasion he broke into the home of a 15 year old girl and later filmed himself mincing around in her underwear. He also took photos of his victims and their homes, one victim has been so traumatised by the crimes committed against her that she attempted suicide. The 15 year old schoolgirl is said to now suffer from constant nightmares because of the violation.

Judge Stuart Baker at Preston Crown Court told Marie:

“You have behaved in a way that shocks and shames, which you say yourself, but it has seriously frightened, grossly undermined the confidence and deeply upset the victims of these crimes.”

Marie was convicted of more than two dozen offences including six counts of voyeurism, 10 counts of possessing indecent photographs of children and six counts of assaulting police officers. He was also found guilty of aggravated burglary, burglary and possession of a firearm, namely a CS gas canister. He will serve a minimum of six years in prison before he is considered for parole.
