Chefs and cooks in Vietnam are importing a huge amount of rats to use in creating tasty meals. A report in Cambodia’s Sin Chew Daily claims that Vietnam is importing around 50 tons of rat meat from Cambodia alone, every day.

The Cambodian rat catchers can earn around 50 pence a kilo for their captured vermin, which is a popular ingredient to many Vietnamese dishes. One young rat catcher told the Sin Chew: “We are working in the rice fields during the day and catching the rat at night. We can catch about 10 kg to 20 kg rats every night”

Every day 30 or so Vietnamese rat traders meet with the Cambodian rat catchers at border checkpoints to barter their deals. One Vietnamese rat trader told reporters that she had purchased a ton of rats per day everyday last month.

Another trader explained the appeal of the rats. “Most Cambodians only know a few ways to cook it, but in Vietnam they know many dishes, such as soups, curries and fried rat,”
