This week director Sam Mendes told Total Film that the eagerly awaited Preacher adaptation is still on the cards.
Preacher was the ground breaking and fantastic comic book series created by the now legendary Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. The comic is a superb read, telling the story of a John Wayne obsessed preacher, Jesse Custer who becomes possessed by the supernatural entity “Genesis”. This gives Custer the voice of God, which must be obeyed. The story follows him, his girlfriend Tulip and an alcoholic Irish vampire named Cassidy as they fight against redneck psychopaths and a Vatican lead secret organisation who control the world’s governments and are desperate to protect the bloodline of Christ.
Mendes has been linked to the project for a long time now, although nothing has yet been confirmed officially. In an interview this week he told reporters that the writing is still in progress and the screenplay is being produced by Big Fish writer John August.
The British director not only hinted that he will be on board for the project but that it could spawn an entire franchise.
“You have to try and get one really good and then, if you’re lucky, you can make a second or a third,” he says.
“You can create something that’s going to run. But I think that there’s certainly more than enough for one good movie and plenty left over.”
