46-year-old Ohio woman Connie Culp has revealed the results of the United States’ first ever successful face transplant.
In 2004 Connie’s husband Thomas shot her in the face with a shotgun and then turned the gun on himself in a piss-poor suicide/murder attempt. Thomas Culp couldn’t even manage to get the suicide part right, he survived and is now in prison.
The shotgun blast ruined Connie’s original face, it shattered her nose, cheekbones, the roof of her mouth and one of her eyes. Connie was part blind, had to breathe through a tube in her neck and also lost her sense of smell. Since the shooting Connie has undergone 30 operations on her face, in an attempt to rebuild it. But in December last year Connie had a revolutionary face transplant similar to that which Frenchwoman Isabelle Dinoire had in 2005.
The surgery is still in the experimental stage, but surgeons are happy with the results and now Connie can breathe properly for herself, as well as eat her favourite foods for the first time in years. Connies husband Thomas was given just seven years in jail for the crime.
