Black Magic In Malaysian Politics

BomohSimilar to the story we ran last year about a Nigerian Black Magic Scandal, now politicians in Malaysia are being accused of recruiting shaman or “bomoh” to cast spells in the Perak state assembly.

The Pakatan Rakyat, or People’s Alliance in Malaysia has been shaken by the accusations of foul play in the state assembly by members of both parties. The Malaysian Star reports that Pakatan’s Perak Backbenchers Club chairman Dr Khalil Idham Lim Abdullah, a muslim has alleged that a United Malays National Organisation assemblyman brought a bomoh into the assembly on Friday and a witness saw the shaman casting a spell on the seat of state Assembly Speaker V. Sivakumar and within the premises itself.

“I was informed on Saturday by a trusted source who said the bomoh cast a jampi (spell) on the Speaker’s seat and sprinkled the hall with black pepper.

[quote]“Perhaps he wants to give us stomach aches,” he quipped during a press conference this morning.

Assembly speaker Sivakumar has also been accused himself of dabbling in the black arts. Word spread last night that he had himself enlisted bomohs from Thailand and India and was attempting to weaken government officers and the police.

Since the Islamic revival in Malaysia in the 1980s the use of bomohs has been frowned upon.
