A Scotsman who was kidnapped last month by Nigerian hostage takers arrived home this week after being set free by Nigerian Special Forces.

Alan Preston, an oil worker from Pilton near Edinburgh has been explaining to reporters how his captors threatened, drugged and tortured him, and attempted to use black magic on him. Mr Preston told reporters from the BBC all about his 16 day ordeal, from how he was snatched from a Nigerian bar by gunmen carrying AK47 rifles to when he was freed by Special Force soldiers.

Mr Preston was watching football in a hotel bar when the men killed his bodyguard and bundled him into the back of a waiting car. They gagged him and shot him in both feet, to prevent his escape. The kidnappers managed to get through a police checkpoint by bribing the cops and took Mr Preston to a hidden lair in the Nigerian jungle swamps.

They gave me a shovel and told me to dig my own grave
Whilst held captive Mr Preston was repeatedly beaten by his captors and force fed goat’s eyes and testicles as part of a black magic ceremony. In genuine fear for his life, Mr Preston was ordered to dig his own grave at one point.

“I thought I would never make it through.” He told reporters.

“They gave me a shovel and told me to dig my own grave.”

Mr Preston was freed after a gunfight between his captors and Nigerian Special Forces, unable to run due to the gunshot wounds in his feet the Nigerian soldiers carried Mr Preston through the Nigerian swamps to safety. He returned home to Edinburgh on Wednesday and has undergone surgery on his wounded feet.

Mr Preston was the seventh Scot to be taken hostage in the Niger Delta region over the past two and a half years.
