Neill Blomkamp is the man responsible for the amazing Citroen “Transformer” commercials which ultimately led to the production of the new Transformer movies. He’s an extremely talented filmmaker and has hooked up with Lord of the Rings genius Peter Jackson to create what looks like being this year’s smash hit.
District 9 has been described by Total Film as “Alien Nation meets Cloverfield”. It’s in the docu-drama style that made Cloverfield a contemporary classic, but it tells a story of prejudice and alienation of visitors who come to this planet. The political undertones regarding apartheid are quite obvious and it seems well suited to the style of the film.
The movie is based on a short film that Blomkamp made in 2005 called Alive in Joberg, Jackson is said to have watched the film and wanted to see more. Jackson is the producer of District 9 and is rumoured to be working with Blomkamp on a possible Halo movie. District 9 is set for a release in September.
