Eight Year Old Granted Divorce

The controversial marriage in Saudi Arabia of an eight year old girl to a man in his 40s has finally been annulled.

The Saudi Gazette reports today that the marriage has been annulled in an out of court settlement. The young girl was given to the man as payment towards a debt by the girl’s father last year, the child’s mother has since fought for her daughter to be allowed to divorce her new husband. Twice however the judge seeing over the case, Sheikh Habib Al-Habib has ruled that the marriage was perfectly legal.

A new judge was placed to oversee the appeal this time, and after lengthy negotiations a settlement was released which frees the child from her marriage. It is unknown just what the husband received as his part of the settlement.

The girl, who has never been named will remain living with her mother who is separated from her father.
