Staff at Berlin Zoo risked their own lives to save that of a woman who deliberately climbed into the animal’s enclosure.
It is not known why the unnamed woman entered the enclosure, she survived despite being seriously mauled by the animals who bit her arms and legs. The keepers on duty dived into the enclosure’s moat and had to physically shove the bear away from the 32 year old woman to save her. As you can see from the photo she was in serious trouble.
“The woman has proved herself to be careless by jumping into the enclosure,” a police spokesman commented. “Logic tells us that polar bears will do this type of thing in this situation.”
The woman had to climb over three separate obstacles in order to gain access to the enclosure, so it doesn’t seem to be accidental.
This is now the second time someone has jumped into the polar bear’s enclosure at Berlin Zoo in the past six months. Last December a man had to be rescued by keepers after he entered the polar bear enclosure complaining of being lonely. On that occasion the animals were distracted with lumps of beef.
