Transformers star Shia LaBeouf stopped crew filming his latest movie so a snake could be removed from the set safely.

The 22-year-old film star was thrilled when a 6ft rattlesnake was spotted on the set of ‘Transformers: Revenge’, despite the rest of the cast running in horror when it slithered into view.

Shia said: “Hey, look at that snake. This is great! Hi Barney!”

The actor then grabbed a broom handle and started gently poking the snake, while still referring to it as “Barney”.

According to National Enquirer magazine, Shia became incensed when a crew member fetched a spade and moved to chop off the serpent’s head, shrieking: “No! Don’t do that, don’t hurt Barney!”

He refused to let anyone near the reptile, insisting producers call a qualified snake handler to remove the animal from the set.

When the professional arrived, Shia made him promise the reptile would be released back into the wild.

He said: “I don’t want Barney killed!”
