Two Minnesota teenagers have been charged with groping and spanking several residents at a care home for the elderly. Ashton Michelle Larson (19) and Brianna Marie Broitzman (19) both appeared in court yesterday charged with abusing elderly women with dementia.
“I think that they are very serious charges,” County Attorney Craig Nelson said after the hearing. “We’re dealing with people who are vulnerable adults. People who are clearly … in need of our care and our concern and our monitoring. They depend on us for everything.”
Nelson added: “I, as a member of this community, certainly can feel it in my bones.”
The two teenagers were reported by colleagues who witnessed the abuse which occurred regularly. The abuse started in early 2008 when the teenagers poked an elderly woman’s breasts and laughed at her complaints. On other occasions the defendants are accused of lying in bed with the senile residents, hugging and kissing them and then tormenting them by nudging their wigs.
Broitzman and Larson, who no longer work at the home, considered the abuse “something fun to do at work,” a witness said. The two were confident they wouldn’t get caught because “residents did not have their minds,” a co-worker told investigators. The two defendants were open about their activities with their colleagues and would often laugh and talk about the incidents which they clearly saw as harmless fun.
