Q Not Permitted For A Boy’s Name

A miserable court in Sweden has ruled that a couple cannot legally name their son “Q”.

As Morningstarr* readers will no doubt know, Q is the name of both a Star Trek and a James Bond character and is surely not only a suitable name but also a very cool name for a boy. However, a stuffy Swedish judge ruled otherwise this week in Ostersund and told the boys parents that the name failed to satisfy basic linguistic requirements.

The court said Q is a letter of the alphabet not typically used as a first name, so it should not be allowed. It cited “relevant case law” that holds that letters are not considered appropriate for names if the letters aren’t already considered a name.

The boys parents had argued that their son had been known as Q since birth, and considering all his family and friends use that name and the boy himself refers to himself as Q they should be allowed to use the name legally.
