13 year old Hannah Mighall who was attacked by a shark last weekend off the coast of Tasmania, has defended her fishy attacker.

Hannah and her 33 year old cousin were surfing at Binalong Bay last Sunday when a five-metre white pointer bit her leg, then dragged her backwards for several metres.

“It sort of just shocked me, I thought I was dreaming, I had to blink a few times and it just grabbed me,” she said.

Hannah and her cousin Syb Mundy both punched and beat the shark until it eventually let go. Hannah has required plastic surgery to repair her mauled leg, and she admits she is lucky to be alive, however she insisted she didn’t want the shark responsible for her injuries caught and killed.

“The shark deserves to live like any other creature. I was in its territory, it’s not its fault,” she said.

She wouldn’t give up surfing, she said. “Surfing is the best thing in the world. I love it,” she added.

As for her bitten surfboard, that will be mounted and hung on her wall as a grisly trophy.
