The trial of a former British Army interpreter, accused of spying for Iran, has taken another bizarre twist.
Daniel James, interpreter for top British general David Richards in Afghanistan, has already told the court that he is a salsa instructor and was once approached by television personality Jonathan Ross to dance on a Channel 4 show.
James told the court “Jonathan Ross came and approached me and said, ‘I want you to dance on a programme called Solid Soul’.”
He then traveled to London from his home in Brighton every Friday to appear on the Channel 4 programme.
The self proclaimed “King of Salsa” even offered to take his boss, General Richards, salsa dancing to teach him a few moves.
Today he told the Old Bailey hearing that he became a black magic priest after visiting Cuba and had performed a voodoo ceremony whilst serving in Afghanistan, designed to protect General Richards from the Taliban.
Iranian-born James is accused of passing top secret coded messages to the Iranian military attache in Kabul. He denies two Official Secrets Act charges, and misconduct in public office.
