A pet duck in New York called Circles has become the first pet to benefit from the right to a protection order under recent changes to state laws.

Circles was shot through the neck whilst paddling in it’s owner’s yard. The attack was carried out by a neighbour using a pellet gun, fortunately Circles was found and rushed to the vets. The vet was able to save the duck’s life, but it’s now concerned owners pressed charges against their neighbour for animal cruelty.

Michelle Auletta, prosecutor at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office successfully prosecuted the attacker and secured a protection order for Circles.

Former New York Governor George Pataki signed into law a provision to include pets in orders of protection back in 2006, but this is the first time the provision was used.
