18 women are competing today to win the crown of “Miss Landmine Survivor 2008″

The contest is taking place in Angola south-central Africa. The country suffered from a long civil war which lasted from 1975 till a partial ceasefire in 2002, and the countryside is littered with minefields.

The effort to defuse the mines is an ongoing struggle, tens of thousands of Angolans have been killed or maimed since the war ended six years ago.
