Bees Swarm To Traffic Jam

12 million bees swarmed a busy California Highway when a truck transporting 400 beehives overturned.

Emergency services called to the scene of the accident were repeatedly stung by the honey bees as they tried to clear the accident and manage the traffic. Eventually teams of specialist bee handlers were enlisted to calm the bees with smoke and shepherd them back into their hives.

The clean up operation took over seven hours, but with no reports of swarming bees in the area the authorities are confident they recaptured the majority of the fugitive insects.

Bee stings can be very dangerous to those with an allergy to the stings, every year there are around six or seven deaths from bee stings in the UK alone, and over 850 people a year are admitted to hospital suffering from their effects.

If an allergic reaction takes place, bee stings can lead to further even more dramatic conditions, in the case of this man a bee sting led to a nasty case of necrotizing fasciitis!
